Welcome to AAC Family Support Network

Our goal is to support and provide resources for the families and caregivers of users of AAC. We strive to educate the community about the power of AAC and communication.

What is AAC?

AAC is the acronym for Augmentative & Alternative Communication. In layman’s terms, it is any form of communication that isn’t speech. AAC includes writing, texting, signing, symbols, gestures, speech generating devices, facial expressions, and more.

Who is AAC for?

While everyone uses AAC at some point, this blog focuses on those with additional communication needs. The deaf/hard of hearing community mostly use sign language. Those with speech disabilities often use symbols and speech generating devices. Others may use devices controlled by eye gaze. There are many, many other options as well, which we hope to cover in this blog.

How can I help?

As a non-AAC user, the best way you can help is by being a patient and______ communication partner. AAC is more work than verbal speech. By patiently and ______ waiting for an AAC user to convey their message, you let them know that their voice is important.

Everyone deserves a voice!

About Us

AAC Family Support Network was started by Dr. Priscilla Danielson and Megan Roberson, the mom of an AAC user. We wanted to create a place where families and caregivers of AAC users could learn and feel supported in their journey.
